SJFCC vs STAGS

SJFCC vs STAGS
2004-05-26. Win By Dave Boxer

First, the vital stats (take note Mao!): The Mighty Fishers: 124 for 6 from 20 overs. Stags: 109 for 7 from 20 overs.

Very enjoyable game down at the park. Managed to get started in fairly reasonable time, although the skipper, yours truly, decided not to take any risks about batting in the dark again and thus, after winning the toss in the most comprehensive style, elected to bat first.

Pat and Bob provided a solid start, putting on 15 for the first wicket. Simon, coming in at number 3 hit a superb quickfire 29 not out, which included 5 fours. After Phil and Ethan had departed cheaply, Jim-Bob came in with his usual air of composure. After swinging wildly at the first couple, he knocked a very nice 26 not out, supported by myself until holing out to mid-off for the 3rd time in 4 games. Harris was looking good (unusual in itself) until he scooped a sweep shot to square leg, but Nick ‘Pugwash’ Perchard ensured that we hit a decent total with a quickfire 20 not out, ably supported by his kid brother, Edward. Thankfully, the overs ran out before Sandsy was called on to bat!

A good all-round bowling performance was kicked off by Andy, who was very unlucky not to get a wicket, and Jim-Bob, who bowled out of his skin, with figures of 2 overs, 1 for 4. After Jimmy ‘slightly balding lovechild of Sandsy’ Chennells got the breakthrough, Simon bowled a nice spell, taking middle stump out with his first ball and generally bowling very tightly. An amazing 2-over spell from Sandsy was the turning point, however, as his deceptive pies caught out two opposing batsmen, one sweeping to Bob and one being bowled by the famous Sandsy ‘quickie’.

Nick wins the award for jammiest wicket of the game, and probably the season, with a ball that pitched 2 yards in front of his own feet and yet managed to skate along the floor for the remaining 20 yards, bowling the poor geezer middle stump. I’m thinking of actually taking that wicket away from you Nick! Pat took a wicket after the batsman’s eyes lit up and tried to hit him for 6 into cow corner, only to find the skipper scampering round the boundary likea dog on heat to take a running catch. Ethan bowled very well, as usual, taking 1 for 3 and the final overs were bowled by Edward Perchard (0 for 16) and some random amateur who’s clearly never bowled in his life before by the name of Boxer, who’s appalling spell saw him end with figures of 0 for 22 and ears ringing with the sound of derision.

So, despite a bit of a wobble at the end, Fishers came through pretty convincingly, and celebrated by scoffing copious amounts of sausage and chips in the Six Bells.

Man of the Match a tough call between Jimmy and Simon, but I think Jimmy just shaded it on account of his bowling.

Cheers,

Dave.
