A disappointing performance by the Fishers against Lower Red, whom we beat comfortably earlier in the season.

The Lower Red side was notably stronger with a sprinkling of youth from the old St Albans U15s, but overall we were outplayed. Chennels, after all the practice at nets early in the year, finally made his first appearance of the season and began with a pretty miserly spell, including a nick behind first ball of the game which their umpire failed to spot (I’m being generous here). Unfortunately, he went on to score 24. Jim’s opening partner was Matt, who induced the first proper wicket courtesy of the old bloke behind the stumps – no, not Milton, the other one, Sandsy! Not content with this, Sandsy then took three more catches AND a stumping in a display of wicket keeping unsurpassed since Milton was in his prime. This heroic display did not stop the Lower Red racking up 137 off their 20 overs, despite a threatening spell from Matt Hounslow who picked up 2 wickets (on his 18th birthday!) and a miserly spell from John King of 1-6.

So, off we went in pursuit of the target and the wheels came off almost straight away. Walmsley was caught, John King bowled and Jim caught and we were soon 15-3 and in trouble. Andrew came in and played a solid innings of 26 but Bob and Bungle soon departed to leave us 53-6 and in trouble. Matt and Dave tried in vain to boost the scoring (Dave even resorting to running me out to keep the strike!) but the innings quickly subsided to 80 all out.

Man of the match – only one candidate really, for his 4 catches, 1 stumping and the fifth catch that never was …………Sandsy!!
